April's Fool

April's Fool

You never believed that I truly loved you,

Even in the end as I stood on your front porch in the pouring rain,

Drenched and shivering, begging to be let in,

But only having the door shut on me in vain.

You always believed since I didn't commit the same sins as you,

That I would never be able to understand your mistakes,

I'd never love you,

But yet you loved me in spite of my own sins I could never unmake.

I forgive you even in this darkness,

I kneel on my knees and pray for God to also forgive,

Things neither of us can understand,

Things that we will always somehow find a way to relive.

I always knew your sins inside out,

You tried to hide them so deep inside yourself,

But at night as our guards came down I saw them inside of you,

And never once did they make me want to bid farewell.

Your strength, love and grace overshadowed all of them,

The way your eyes lit up when you saw my face,

The way you held me every time I got off a plane,

As though this was never going to end, never going to be erased.

I saw the goodness in you that fought against the evil every day,

The light that shined so brilliantly,

The stardust that laced every inch of your being,

I saw you, your faith, your effort, your resiliency.

You never believed that I truly loved you,

Even in the end as I stood on your front porch in the pouring rain,

Drenched and shivering, begging to be let in,

But only having the door shut on me in vain.

And now I have moved on to another life in another place,

And you remain shut-in somewhere that is so cruel,

And thinking it is the best that you deserve,

You remain April's fool.
