The 30 Years

The 30 Years

  1. I found my fight when I pushed so hard to get into this world that I was born with a broken collarbone.
  2. I found my social skills when Mom took me to her women’s league meetings and everyone passed me around in my grandma’s crocheted blanket.
  3. I found my taste buds when Dad poured soy syrup instead of maple syrup on my pancakes at the Owl Inn.
  4. I found my love for nature when Mom asked me what I was hiding in the pocket of my overalls in New Orleans, and I pulled out my pet cockroach.
  5. I found my voice when I sat on Mom’s lap during her choir rehearsals and started singing along.
  6. I found my writing when I wasn’t allowed to play with fancy toys, so instead wrote my first book about my sore throat, aptly titled “There Is A Microphone In My Throat.”
  7. I found my best friend when Grandpa Ten Haken put me on his lap and starting telling me his WWII stories, stories he had never shared with anyone else.
  8. I found my dance when Dad cleared all of the furniture out of the living room and taught me to country swing dance to Garth Brooks.
  9. I found my music when I heard “Canon in D’ for the first time and transcribed it into every key possible on the piano.
  10. I found my sense of humor when Grandpa Sherman taught me how to stay silent during parties until you had a sure zinger, and then just say it with the utmost confidence.
  11. I found my creativity when I wrote plays with my cousin and performed them on the coffee table for a packed crowd of Shermans.
  12. I found my baking skills when Grandma Ten Haken would teach me her secrets in her kitchen, in between stealing sips of wine from her hidden glass in the freezer.
  13. I found my healing when Mom came into my room when I was home from the hospital every five minutes to make sure I was still breathing.
  14. I found my backbone when I was voted off the lunch table in junior high- survivor style.
  15. I found my trauma when I heard “Staircase to Heaven” played on an acoustic guitar at my best friend’s funeral in ninth grade.
  16. I found my heart when I realized I was willing to freeze to death to watch a certain high school hockey goalie make sure no one scored.
  17. I found my patriotism when I won a speech-writing contest about veterans and gave my speech at multiple VFWs.
  18. I found my heartbreak when he left me moments before we were supposed to leave for college together in Florida.
  19. I found my life partner when I tried cuban coffee at Versailles for the first time.
  20. I found my lust for EDM when I went to my first club in South Beach.
  21. I found my mentor when I refused to take ‘no’ for an answer and worked every internship I could during college.
  22. I found my persistence when I would not stop emailing the CEO of the company I wanted to work for until he would hire me.
  23. I found my new reality when my sister took her own life.
  24. I found my passion when I lied and said I could do social media, so a company hired me and said if I met their goals in a month they would raise my salary by 10K, but if I didn’t I was gone. I stayed up every night until at least 3 AM studying everything I could about social media and met their goals in three weeks.
  25. I found my rebellion when I eloped in a small meditation chapel in Missouri.
  26. I found my strength when I walked away from an abusive marriage months later.
  27. I found my courage when I starting writing honestly about what mattered to me.
  28. I found my priorities when I moved to be closer to my family.
  29. I found my willpower when he was right there, right in front me, ready to be my everything, but I still said ‘no,’ knowing we had grown into two entirely different people.
  30. I found my life over thirty years.
